Restorative Justice Programs
Restorative Justice philosophy represents a very different lens to view, understand
and respond to crime and victimization. It is a new way of thinking about how a
community can respond to crime. It holds offenders accountable and places emphasis
on repairing the harm done to the victim and the community.

A Lesson in Triumph over Adversity: Angela's Story
She was only 11 years old when she first came to Child & Family Services for
help. Her mother was concerned with the problems *Angela was having in school. It
was difficult for her to take directions from her teachers. At home she became frustrated
easily and acted out verbally and sometimes physically. Her mother didn't know what
to do so she brought her to the school psychologist who discovered a learning problem
that requred extra time for Angela to complete her work. This added to her frustration
as she grew closer to repeating a grade. Angela's mother was instrumental in seeking
the care she needed to help address her daughter's issues.
Angela was first referred to Child & Family Services for a psychiatric evaluation,
which indicated that she did not suffer from a psychotic disorder, but could benefit
from counseling. She then scheduled for weekly counseling sessions, which helped
her recognize her issues and find ways to work with people; even if she disliked
them.
Soon, Angela's grades at Performing Arts began to get better and she excelled as
a theater major. Through her poetry and stories she was able to express her feelings
and social concerns. Her performances matured and became more convincing. She had
great empathy for others, which continues to this day.
